Not work. No socializing. Some form of calm. Movies. Random tracks of music. Something that lets my mind fly.

Today I ended up stumbling upon Educating Rita. I won't spoil it for you, it's a great movie. But it got me thinking about all the fragile relationships that we set, that end up making the memories so dear to us and so bittersweet when they end. All of those people that we remember fondly, that end up being nothing but passerby's in the bigger picture. The fragility is what makes it so important. Half the people I know today, we will never run into each other years later. I wish I could get a follow up on what happened to quite a few that I used to know. Yet I wonder if I did get a follow up would it make it any less special?

I remember playing Perfect World at a particularly tough time in my life. Yet it was people that made it special for me. I remember meeting a person while leveling who decided to stick around because both of us had 5 letters in our name. The thing is, his wasn't even supposed to be spelled that way. He misspelled his, I chose the one that I normally hide behind. I remember the first guild that I was in crumbling down. I remember choosing a guild name. I remember doing all the boring leveling and eventually being flown over the higher level areas, because I was bored and they looked so pretty. People even took me dungeoning. Though I don't think that I understood what a dungeon was, but I tagged along anyway. I stopped playing shortly after those people stopped. The game lost taste. I knew some of their names on facebook but I decided to throw those away. I wonder how did they get on with their lives. Did they fix what was broken? Where did they end up going? Who did they become?

I wonder same for those few friends that I had in my primary school. About the first boy to have a crush on me. About the one that just didn't show up for a date one day. I wonder who they became to be. What is their worldview. Who are their loved ones. What things do they enjoy now. Yet I remember them. And perhaps those memories are made better by the fact that we don't reconnect with them.

They came. They gave us something to remember. We all separated paths as better beings. And unknowingly we will do it again and again. With some we'll part ways willingly. With others we won't know that they chose to until they're already gone. Yet it makes all the memories that you make even more precious.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-40029171503014187342015-03-13T16:02:00.000+00:002015-03-13T16:03:44.504+00:00Wildstar: the denial of the death of an MMOwatch this video

And now tell me does it seem normal for you for one out of two servers to only have 17 people in the middle of the day? To have no economy?

Of course it's not! And there's suggestions. "change your payment model", "close the server down". Nope. Nothing is done for 5 months now. And the best thing is that when people see this and then leave (mostly because Wildstar launched free trials) they get badmouthed.

for example:

"I swear someone is paying people to make ludicrous statements like this post.I am having such a blast in WS every day. Now I'm sorry, but even private servers of MMOs have more than 17 people playing on a megaserver at 1pm GMT+0. I will record some more at 6 pm just for them, but still... The fact that the game is dying is sad. The fact that Carbine is doing nothing about it is sad. But the fact that people will call you a jerk for just pointing out that this is not normal is the most frustrating part.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-49868914986652337532015-03-03T01:52:00.001+00:002015-03-03T01:52:19.757+00:00What's BloodLust Shadowhunter and why you should get itI played the demo of this gem 3 years ago. The game was under a different name at that point but already had potential.

Part one of the demo if anyone is interested

And just today it appeared on steam as early access! The sad part is that this game will be drowned by such as Five Nights At Freddy's 3, even though a lot more thought has been put into it and all the reviews are positive. Why? Mostly because nobody knows that it exists.

Do you like vampire games? More notably Vampire the Masquerade Redemption or Bloodlines? Then please look into Bloodlust. You don't have to buy it. But watch a few broadcasts of it. Maybe pick up the demo to play. Because this is the first good vampire game in years! And made by only one person that seems to be super cooperative on the forums.

want to hear more?

-In the game you have 3 classes (Witch, thief and warrior) and two races - vampire and half human.
- campaign can last anywhere between 10 to 30 hours, though it could be 100+ if you get lost in dungeon exploration.
- lots of secret rooms and random elements. I've seem to have found completely different places to other people that played it.
- minion system! Make yourself a vampire buddy! They're dumb as rocks, but quite useful!

and most importantly, it's bringing the vampire RPG game sub genre back. So adopt a vampire game developer today and ensure that one day more games like Bloodlines come!

My guild is now a small community stretched between WoW, Wildstar and Guild Wars 2 with me personally leading the Guild Wars 2 section) and one of the posts really got me worked up.

Bottom line, one guy decided to post this. And all I could think of was "don't categorize, ever". So mistakes that the blog post makes

1. They're obviously against certain types of people and guilds, even though there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. For example helper guilds.
2. They're forgetting the human factor. I know plenty of people in plenty of guilds and there's no inherently bad type of guild. Everyone tends to band together to do what they want to do to and to play the way that they want to play.
3. No conclusion drawing. Whether they paint a negative or a positive image, there's no "therefore" after these descriptions. No advise, no point about improving guilds, no suggestions, no opinion as to why they're writing it. Just bias observations. It's literally a blog post about a guy going "I don't like it, because they're not my guild and I'm the only one normal!".
4. So many generalizations and so much prejudice. Examples include:

"they often immediately try to get attention of the GMs, etc. by producing “Quality” fan-site content. Often, this content is pieced together by using pirated software (After Effects, Photoshop, etc.) and media packs provided by the publisher. if you try to prod into what software they use, they will often either say a free variant of the software they actually use, or just say they use the software, just without saying it’s pirated until you start asking questions about the price of the software"

...What?

"and this often devolves the guild into an MMORPG Hopper or known as a Multi-MMO Guild."

how is being a community a downside?

"In this type of guild, it is not uncommon to find hardcore people who will level up with that guild’s resources just to leave the guild when they hit level cap to join a hardcore guild. This often is due to the guild’s inability to be “Frontal” or “Aggressive” with keeping their members. Some members of a social guild will attempt to be “Aggressive”, but often fail to do so, because of their social instability and being “Anti-Social” when they think they aren’t."

that's just insulting.

And then this guy has the guts to call his own guild normal and saying that that's precisely why they're not popular...
People like this make me want for blogs to be not a thing so that I could directly respond with what kind of pompous prick they are. The problem with the Internet is that they probably don't even care. After all why wouldn't you insult majority of people when you can get away with it?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-38746024700594943532015-02-03T02:31:00.001+00:002015-02-03T02:31:32.213+00:00February 3rd, Human ShenanigansIt's 2:20AM. Yesterday we started semester two of my second year of uni. I'm increasingly unsure of what I want to do with my life. There's that part of me that just wants to make and make and make based on topic life. There's that part of me that wants to show the experience of a sleepless night, the doubt, the emotions, the kids in hospital beds, the human things. And then there's a part of me that's completely at a loss how to put my heart into something virtual. There's the part of me that doesn't have the right skills and the part of me that's very indifferent.

Did I even choose the right field? Is this where there's space for me? I guess we'll find out in a year and a half.

And yet everything is... So not what I would like it to be. Between forced pretentiousness, between creating what they call "art" and lost between others interests I feel out of fumes. And then there's topics that nobody would ever touch. We're encouraged to research but we're not given the freedom.

How about as a research topic - what virtual lives mean to us? How much heart do we put into our little fantasy toons? How much more real people are when they get to hide behind a different face? How much time do we spend orchestrating it and can it be counted for a real world experience of some kind?
But... It's not something that would ever be written about in an actual paper. Rather something majority of industries would choose to ridicule.

MMO of my choice is back to Guild Wars 2 and The Sims 4 is not that bad. Why do all of the announcements, games and expansions have to come out when I'm busy and/ or broke?

What's more important, the life of leisure and happiness on limited security or to fall apart somewhere where I couldn't feel human?

2AM shenanigans.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-30621218027018787692014-12-14T00:03:00.002+00:002014-12-14T00:03:38.279+00:00about personal life (living with EDS)It's nighttime and I'm feeling down. Whenever that happens I tend to share something very personal that I shouldn't. This isn't in any way work or industry related. It's just me related.

I have Ehler Danlos Syndrome. And sometimes I get overly frustrated because of it. I'm barely coping this year because of it. I'm doubting myself because of it. I don't know can I work because of it.

For all those that don't know Ehler Danlos is a connective tissue disorder. It messes up your joints, your digestive system, your skin, your blood vessels. I had two back surgeries because I had scoliosis. I have joint pains quite often. Knees, ankles would be my most common ones. I have very easily irritated stomach and acid reflux. Often I'll get stomach pains. I get nauseous almost daily. When I was a child, I would spend my nights sitting in the bathroom, thinking that perhaps I'll throw up. I think at some point I got used to it, as right now those nights are rare. I can cope.

However as time goes on there's more and more things that I can't cope with. The acid damaged my throat. I get the reflex of coughing every time I eat. I end up with a sore throat most of the time. This year I had to struggle with constant tiredness. They diagnosed that I'm badly anemic. Why? My blood vessels don't hold properly, so there's a slow seepage all over my body.

What hurt back then is that you're treated like it's pointless to take care of you. "Oh you're getting worse. But that's to be expected. Here drink this very strong iron. It has lots of side effects, but it might help. Or you might need to be on it for life". It feels crushing. Especially when you see all the people with the same condition that ended up in a wheelchair. Or with a feeding tube. Or with a drain in their head. And I've heard that as long as you don't choose the wheelchair you don't need it. And perhaps in my case it will be true. I hurt, yes. I get incredible dizzy spells because my heart doesn't like pumping the blood to my head. I get tired easily and my heart has tachycardia. But I tell myself that I can cope. Because I have to and I'll have to continue to. Because there's no way to fix me. So it's part of me.

What hurts now is that tiredness is really making me struggle with my second year. When I get home I don't want to do anything. When it's time to wake up, I don't want to go anywhere. And it's getting me to breakdown. In the last two weeks I cried in front of my professors twice. And I think I startled one of them. Others probably find me weird. Or overly dramatic. Or unreasonably emotional. And yet I'm pushing myself more than ever before. Christmas is coming and here's me planning to go in 5 days a week despite the holidays and code code code.

My own mind is conflicting with me.

One side is telling me that I'm pathetic for complaining. That the world won't adapt to me. That no matter what I think I'll end up in a corporation and will work for longer than just 9 to 5. Because I'll have to. Because I can't afford not to. That there's nothing really wrong with me. Just some pains. Everyone lives with some pains. My boyfriend struggles with hyperactive metabolism. That comes with bad organ damage and pains too. There isn't anyone completely fine and in general I'm not as bad as I could be.

The other side says that it's okay to give up. Why bother trying? It will just get worse and worse and all I'm doing is torturing my body. I could easily be a stay at home woman. It wouldn't be too hard without any children.

And yet knowing me I would probably continue pushing myself no matter what. Mostly because I feel like it's completely up to me just how bad I get. Because I feel like if I don't give up I will continue going no matter how broken my body starts feeling. But sometimes trying to be me and trying to be normal gets so frustrating that I just... Well I spend hours of my sleeping time just sitting there listening to music, watching random documentaries on youtube and moping while nobody sees me. So today I write. Write about this weird side of my life. Because I've seen others share their experiences on the Internet, so why not?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-89628658279537735062014-09-21T02:32:00.003+01:002014-09-21T02:32:26.840+01:00the taboo of criticism and lack of freedom of speech (feminism rant)Just going to be a quick one this time.

It really irks me how much freedom of speech you lose if you want to be employable. You can't stand in public and say "I dislike this video game because of these reasons", or "I dislike this particular group of self entitled people". Even if you have valid criticism, media will catch on on it and it will be blown out of proportion. Imagine working for a big company. You go out with a new acquaintance to just have a good time and you start spilling your heart out. Next day in the press "This company hates women!".

So I'm going to say things before I can be silenced. Once regret comes in years I'll just delete it. I dislike the current feminism movement against gaming in general. I dislike how Ubisoft is disallowed from telling that they don't plan a main female character for their own game, because that somehow oppresses women. I dislike those that said that in Hitman there should have been no prostitutes, because you can't display that, because you objectify women. I dislike the fact that you can kill millions of men over and over and over in video games and nobody bats an eye, but kill one woman that wasn't important to the story and suddenly you're using women as props and objects. No, you're setting a story line. And yes, a damsel in distress is a valid story line. Why? Because we can relate to wanting to save a loved one. Not because our loved ones are worthless, or weak. But because we love them and want to help them.
I'm frustrated with how one sided the discussion is. As a woman I'm ashamed that someone else is using our sex to stop someone elses creative work. We should be allowed to write our own story-line and set our characters however we want and customers should be allowed to vote with their valets. If someone creates a wonderful female lead, that's great! However why does everyone have to create only female leads? Also only ones that fit certain criteria that will satisfy some women? A woman big breasts, but she can have small ones too, a woman can be stupid, clumsy, weak, intelligent, strong, or any other descriptive word. A woman is a human. So why can't she be portrayed in a story, the way that that said story writer wants to portray her as?

Not trying to insult anyone. Not going to talk about the dishonest people that censor their opponents and are seeking for fame, while playing a victim. Just expressing my opinion. Because why is it so, that certain kind feminists can silence other women just because those disagree with them? Am I oppressing myself by wanting the right to create whatever I would want to create?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-78775034698633966432014-07-24T01:23:00.001+01:002014-07-24T01:27:39.189+01:00starved for more life simulationWith The Sims 4 looking more and more stripped and after being starved for any life simulation game for years now and annoying my family and friends up to a point where I started to sound like a broken record I thought that I will share my thoughts here and perhaps it will inspire someone besides me to do something.

The market is solely dominated by one developer. And it really irks me. What I would give for other known life simulations to be recreated. I would gladly throw my money at Kudos 3 or even Alter Ego 2. Unfortunately it's not going to happen. So at the moment, the only game that allows you to actually involve yourself in working a regular job, aging, having kids and living an alter life is The Sims series. EA is dominating and it shows. They're brave enough to price their game at 59.99 pounds and take away key features such as:
seamless neighborhood
pools
toddler life stage
swimming
story progression
ability to re-colour your clothing
ability to use unnatural colours of your skin and eyes
And that already makes me disappointed. So I ask myself, when will the next life simulation game came out after this one? Never?

So let me share ideas. If one of the people reading this will steal these, I don't particularly mind. Because ideas are easy to come up with. Executing them is the problem.
Life simulation doesn't have to have Sims control scheme, or the lack of interactivity by being a text adventure with pictures. Let me tell you about the features that it could have.

What if for example, you had a chance to control your human in first person? Not trough the moments in life that would get you an adult only rating of course, but... Imagine if you could control your human yourself for for example extra work experience, extra skill point building, extra relationship building. What if what you worked as determined what you did trough out the day?
Oh, you work as a doctor, why not to play a surgeon simulator kind of mini game?
Oh you work as a cleaner, why not to play a less gross version of Viscera Cleanup Detail?
You're a manager? Want to play theme hospital? Perhaps Hotel Giant?
It would be hard to implement, but think of how much it would add to the game. And don't tell me that people wouldn't be interested. People would agree to clean virtual dishes for entertainment, as long as the game actually rewarded them for doing so.

Now think of that control being used outside of work place mini games. Perhaps we could add a crazy factor to it. Want to take out your microwave and throw it? Why not! Don't be surprised if it has repercussions though.

Now what about incorporating a dating sim into the mix? Picking up a partner shouldn't involve just pointless emote spamming. What if you actually had to use words to show that you care?

What about gradual aging? It would require a lot of models to go from baby to an adult and then a lot of texture changes to go from adult to an elder, but it would add depth.

What about such simple customization options as the ability to make your hair shorter or longer with a slider? Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion had it, so I don't think that it's impossible.

What about having different time periods to choose to play in? They don't have to be unlimited. They don't even have to progress, but player would appreciate the ability to choose.

All I'm doing here is spewing ideas at you all. Do I think that such game will ever come out? No. To put all those features in would be far too much work even for the most dedicated people out there. However perhaps someone could grab at least some of them, perhaps someone would be inspired to think about what could be done to life simulation genre as a whole and perhaps this post won't get lost in the sea of pointless Internet blogs and articles. All I want is for a bit more variety in the genre. I know that it sounds lazy, but I don't want to wait till I finish university and spend countless years working at my free time to actually see another game in the genre. I know that eventually I'll end up doing it, simply because the want to play won't go away, but in the mean time I would like someone to make a product and take my money.

Oh and while we're still here and on topic, EA is not all bad. They're giving away The Sims 2 for free with all expansions up until July 31st.
All you have to do is:
Download and install Origin
Create a free Origin Account
Launch Origin and log into your Origin Account
From the ‘Games’ tab in the Origin menu, select ‘Redeem Product Code’ and enter the code: I-LOVE-THE-SIMS
I understand not liking DRM. I don't like Origin either. Some call it a scam, some call it spyware. But it still doesn't change the fact that EA is giving out The Sims 2 for free on their official store.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-5279669185418955352014-06-24T23:53:00.005+01:002014-06-24T23:58:36.068+01:00Wildstar: my newfound addiction

I've fallen for yet another MMO. MMO that in the current stage is buggy, that's pay monthly, an MMO with grind in it and an MMO that does very little differently. And yet it feels right.

Now what is Wildstar? Wildstar is a recently released MMO made by Carbine studios (that consists of old World of Warcraft developers). What does it do new?
- it has a solely telegraph based combat system (video of a low level in-game adventure that I've filmed while in the beta to give an example of combat)

But maybe what is new is the wrong question. Perhaps what we should ask is what is old?

- attunements
- 20 and 40 man raids
- 40 man warplots (a giant guild pvp thing)
- reputation grinds
- two factions fighting each other

One might find these old features repulsive. But I find them very much nostalgic. It's very hard to explain how remaking the old can create something special, but we have already seen this in the industry multiple times. World of Warcraft didn't do a lot of new. It took a lot of features from Everquest and just improved upon them. The same as Wildstar in a lot of ways feels familiar.

I don't know whether this bird will fall or fly. It has a lot of right things and a lot of wrong things (classes not very balanced, lots of bugs, botting and gold selling that the company is trying to fight very actively), however I already made enough memories to make this purchase worth it. And it did give me an idea to look back before moving forward. Is there anything in the game industry that we left in the 2000s? In the 90s? Even in the 80s? Was something forgotten like an old page in the book just because it was deemed outdated? Perhaps sometimes you don't need to be new to be right?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-24282568852069183272014-06-15T14:55:00.002+01:002014-06-15T14:55:21.456+01:00guess who is back?

After my hand ins I went on a silence spree. And with a good reason. I needed to relax. However I wasn't just sitting on my bottom the whole time. I was busy playing, exploring, volunteering, moving... This summer is an active one for me. The next one is going to be even more so. Why? Because movement keeps away sadness, boredom and depression. Because contributing to the society throws you in groups of people that you don't know. It allows you to work on your confidence and networking. It also allowed me to get into plenty of debates and give me a lot to think about. That means that I have a lot of new things to write about! (That and my recent experiences with games). Either way this is just a post to show off my full hand in work for my digital arts module. It was far more work than I thought it will be and I only got a C for it, but work is work and I can still show it off (by the way, got an A in programming. My next year choice is most definitely right for me!)
Digital experimentation, all of the assets that I've done and the combinations of them

Now before we continue let me talk here for a bit.
First - what didn't upload? The pixel tree assets, but you'll see them being used further down.
If I had more time what would I spend extra time working on? Road and character assets. All were thrown together last minute and it shows.
What did I learn? When making your grass tiles, make your plants on the same sheet. Some grass tiles blended with the colour of my trees perfectly and obviously that meant that either some grass tiles were unusable or I couldn't use some trees.

If I didn't have to work on all of the assets what would I have spent my time doing? Thinking over the map layout and design. Out of the lack of time I went with very linear or circular map designs. If I could have just spent time designing the layout, rather than all the assets I could have done a better job over all.

Now let's head to combination and experimentation with assets!

Map combination wise, what's wrong with these pictures? Well one, I could have played with sizes a lot more. Small trees, tall trees. It was supposed to be an isometric viewpoint, but it's not entirely right. Plus the fact that there's no depth of field bugs me. But as my first real digital arts work, it's not too bad.

The overall lesson of this? I'm a programmer, not an artist. And that's exactly what my feedback said as well. Sometimes it's hard to take it in that no matter how hard you try, you still can't be good at everything, but it's for the best as we move on.

Now before I forget, this is a list of things that I want to discuss.
Salford Create Festival and my inability to understand art
Wildstar (the game that consumed my last 3 weeks)
my programming work
female characters, ubisoft and the recent media storm

Dear reader, if you just dropped in and none of those topics seem interesting to you, you're allowed to request topics. Last 4 stress filled days remaining!
I finished my unity game. Really proud of it. sure might not be advanced visually, but I made it fully. Not some demo. Not one never ending level, but a full game with narrative. Will expand by showing code and all of the nice little stuffs that I did after I report the work in.
We also got to choose our modules for next year:
Agile Production Management
Digital Narrative Technologies
Games Design Planning
Games Design Prototyping
Tools Programming for Dig Games

Engine Programming for Game

Tools and Engine programming! Oh yeah! Today after finding out that 3 of my classmates (some very code oriented) are struggling with Blackjack which was quite easy for me I feel like I've made the right choice. Confidence going back - I'm going to be a programmer and I'm going to be good at it!

Currently in the middle of doing level designs for my arts module hand in. What I didn't realize is that I'll need to make every single little asset that the level design would be made out of in the game. On top of that it has to be varied. Already finished with the vector side, doing pixel art now.

vector graphics house making items

pixel graphics house making items.

Off to do the rest of my work. The hand in day is approaching and I'm stressing out. My group project is being stalled by our assets artist. As a level designer and assembler I don't know whether to laugh or cry. On one hand I would like to just be able to implement my revised levels (our team decided that each level should last 30 seconds, therefore the previous level concepts were scrapped and replaced by something more fast paced) and I know that even later down the road I'll have even less time, on the other hand I want the opportunity to work on my other projects.

Currently I'm most invested into my unity project. The text adventure one trough various life stages.

But to be honest I'm losing faith in myself. I'm not good at art and that's why I chose this approach, but could I really show this to any of my future employers?
One way or another in a month it will all be over. And I hope that I could show you all some quality work at that point.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-47598226745222431882014-03-16T02:58:00.002+00:002014-03-16T02:59:05.852+00:00Post of the day - Long time no see!

Hello all, I was sick and now I'm busy with moving. Nonetheless here is the progress that I've made with my project some far. I made a level 1 design for the group project. Then refined it twice.

The level was already made in unity 3D, however I'll have to remake it in unity 2D soon enough, because my group has decided that it will be easier to work with.

Was quite busy working with my programming unity game as well. Made a prototype that I've shown off at Thursday and I got the greenlight to continue working on it. What's perfectly done for that one? I made girl child life stage, boy child life stage has all the assets that I need and only needs assembling in unity, currently working on backgrounds for the toddler stage (already finished the backgrounds for the baby stage). The game is very simplistic, but still requires a lot of work. I hope that you all are doing good. Hopefully I'll find time to post here more often :)
For those that don't know what that is, Razor Statement is supposed to be an information sheet stating what games you looked into and how is your game going to be alike those (or at least I think that's what it is), and the rip-o-matic is an inspiration video for your game.
We have two rip-o-matic videos for our game, because we couldn't decide on the music. You can watch both versions here and here.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01882582190775449501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627253766327451432.post-9094366285228850782014-02-26T23:13:00.001+00:002014-02-26T23:13:45.851+00:00Post of the day: small game Thursday - Girls like RobotsGirls like robots, nerds like courners, everyone likes pie, except for robots, fish like company... Yes, it's a puzzle game. Puzzle game with a story that's equivalent to a hallucinating chipmunk on coffee and steroids. Yes, it's that crazy and all over the place. But most importantly, it's funny.

The bad points

The game is pretty short. And that's pretty much it.

The good points

It's the best story that I've seen in a puzzle game. It's the most humorious recent story. It's crazy, it's all over the place, you literally do not know what the next level is going to be. And that's what's great about it.

Stare at this wonderful octopus rant:

Now that I gave away too much about this game - yes, you should get it.

Will be a busy week this week. It turned out though that being a level designer/ background pixel artist is fun. Started working on level 1, scene 1. For that I needed some Japanese houses and the sky. Ended up spending a whole lot of time on the sky behind the houses. Produced several different variations of it, so my group will have a nice choice. Houses are a work in progress at the moment. This is my work so far:

Background Sky

mostly just this. It took a while to get the shape even semi accurate. Will need to place some extra houses in a separate background tomorrow and finish these ones off.

Tomorrow's blog is likely to be about this again.

We went from extensive manuals, to in game tutorials to tutorials that you're allowed to skip or no tutorial at all. This article is based completely on my own opinions and in no way should be taken as actual rules.

Your game should not require a tutorial

By now we have clearly defined genres and clearly defined control schemes. For example if I'm in a first person game, I'll expect to walk with WASD (or I might try the arrow keys if WASD doesn't work). If I'm in an RPG or an MMO the movement can be also done with mouse clicks. However there are very few variations. Even when we're talking about inventory, quest log, skill sheet, etc management they should not be so complicated that I would need a full 20 minute tutorial to learn them. With very few exceptions a control scheme of a game should feel intuitive. You're in a game to enjoy a game world and not to spend hours trying to figure out how to walk.

The joy of being able to skip a tutorial.

Let's say I decided to play a realistic flight simulation game (one of those exceptions that I mentioned in the previous paragraph). Tutorial is most definitely a necessity. Let's say that that flight game had a campaign. I played trough it all and decided to play trough it again using the exact same plane that I was using before (maybe I just wanted to see if I can get a better score, or maybe I just wanted to enjoy myself this time without any challenge) and behold! The tutorial plays again! While the first time the tutorial was helpful and probably would be a welcome sight if I was returning to the game after months of not playing it, right now it annoys me. It's a series of repetitive tasks that I already know how to do. And here I am sitting, looking all grumpy, going trough 20-30 minutes of everything that I already know just so I could get into a game again.

The ability to repeat the tutorial

Let's say that I am once again in a complex flight simulator and I started to lose my concentration on the game while in a tutorial. Maybe I was being talked to, maybe my dinner was burning, either way I did not pay attention to a few of the controls and now I have no idea what I'm doing. Repeatable tutorials! They're a blessing in this kind of situation.

Just move your tutorial onto the main menu

Best solution if you feel like your game needs a tutorial is to move it to the main menu. A person can just choose not to play it then and they can choose to replay it whenever they want. Example:

The whole game is a tutorial

I'm referring to such games as for example Portal. As you go trough the game you're introduced to new mechanics slowly with mini tutorials. Whether it is good or not will depend on how well it is implemented. A game called Girls Like Robots does it with a lot of humour.

This way the tutorials of new mechanics are no longer annoying. They're amusing. They're part of the journey that you're on.

Pop up tutorials

While I have a lot against The Sims 3, one thing that it did right was the tutorials. When a player approaches a new mechanic a pop up shows up suggesting the player some help on understanding the mechanic. The player can accept, refuse or switch these pop ups off entirely.

You can also witness this kind of style of tutorial in Guild Wars 2:

How not to make a tutorial

I absolutely love Assassin's Creed games, however the first one had one of the most annoying mandatory tutorial. Playing for the first time you would have been able to figure out what to do without this tutorial and if you're replaying this game these first minutes will make you grind your teeth.

Greenheart Games was founded in July 2012 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Klug with a mission to develop games that are fun to play. They attracted a lot of attention after making a fake version of their own first game - Game Dev Tycoon, releasing it on pirate sites and having pirating gamers go bankrupt in their game from rampant piracy.

Let's jump to the good part - the game itself!

The gameplay is very simple. You start a new game and create a character. You start in the 80s and aim to become a successful game making company by around 2020s when you will be retiring. At first all you have to do is click on your character and select what they should do. Later in game there are two menus - things that people can do individually and things that you would be working on as a whole company.

(company menu on the left and personal menu on the right)

The goal is to make games that would be as profitable as possible. That is achieved by keeping with state of the art technology by researching the newest things and putting them into your new engines, by generating game reports of the games that you made to understand your audience better. For perfection you should match topic with genre, topic target audience with selected platform target audience and the genre with the interest in it on a specific platform. Lots of variables to take into the account. You are likely to end up experimenting, but then again that's what this game is about! While making the game you'll have 3 development cycles. In each one you'll have to decide what to invest most time into.

Afterwards you wait for reviews and hope that they're positive.

(obviously my game is not as perfect as it could have been)

Then you have the extra management to think about. See that blue number in the previous picture? That's my research points. You get some research points for generating game reviews, fulfilling contracts, making games and making engines. Making engines however is pretty expensive. I never managed to have enough research points to research everything as it comes up, therefore careful research points management is a must!

Other things include such tasks as staff hiring. The better your workers are the better games you'll produce, however you have to invest quite a hefty sum in order to be able to hire a person and there's no guarantee that the people suggested to you will be good at anything.

(I invested the maximum amount, but the results were not impressive)

Then there's small chance cards that will be coming up. Opportunities to have Interviews, cards asking you how you will deal with piracy and chance cards suggesting to release your old engines to the public.

Whatever decisions you'll make the game will not try to change your view on things. Unless, of course, you pirated the game.

Besides all of that there are a bunch of secret achievements and hidden Easter eggs. The game is easy to learn, however the amount of combinations that you can make will likely overwhelm you. It's a small game, but it is very well made. If you're into simulation games you're likely to lose hours playing this game.

As far as the quality goes I would give this game 10/10. However be mindful that what I shown you here is all the game is. If you're not into these kind of games, you probably won't love this one as much as I do.

You can get this game from the developer website or steam. I just can't stress enough how good this game is. If you don't feel like getting it, at least look into it. Knowing it is most definitely worth it!

If you're able to create a polished, good, big game, please, go ahead, I am not saying that it should not be attempted. This post will merely serve to inspire by showing minimalist titles that received moderate success.

Super Hexagon

I recently picked this title up and it's simply addictive. The game mechanics are simple. Your mouse arrow is attached to a stationary hexagon. Your job is to move your mouse arrow to a different courner of the hexagon to avoid hitting into figures flying towards you. There are a few levels and in a level the difficulty increases every 10 seconds. Because you're likely to fail very early on you spend very little time actually being in game and therefore you tell yourself that it's alright to have one more try. The brutal gameplay and a wonderful music score keeps you playing for hours. The video next to this text shows off the gameplay of the first level.

Angry Birds

While the game is colourful and indeed quite amusing looking the mechanics of it are quite simplistic. You decide how hard to throw the bird and try to demolish a structure with as few birds as possible. The game certainly released at just the right time on the right platform to receive all of that popularity, but nonetheless it's a good example of a popular game with a very simple mechanic.

Flappy Birds

While the true story behind how this game became popular is unknown, the fact that the bird was hard to control, the average game play time was in seconds and you had the ability to show off your high score to your friends and challenge them most definitely played a part in its popularity. While no longer on the market the game raised enough commotion to spawn countless clones.

Gone Home

Let me begin by openly telling you that I don't like this game. I think that the story lacks quality for a story driven game and it used controversial topics and nostalgia for an era to gain customers. Having said that, this game has accomplished something important in the industry. It brought a discussion on "how much gameplay does a game need?". Together with games like "Dear Esther" ts has started a new genre, that's yet to be named. Story driven exploration, or exploration driven story is the closest that I'll get to accurately describing this genre. In these kind of games you do nothing, but explore the environment around you. As you approach either important places or objects such as notes, recordings and such the story starts to emerge. That's the whole game. However the suspension of "what's next?" and the intrigue of feeling like a detective uncovering a story keeps you playing. I believe that this genre holds a lot of potential.
Having said all of that, what I believe and what I think of it doesn't matter - it was still a very successful game with very minimal gameplay.

What is the correct FoV?

That depends on the size of the screen and your distance away from it. Usually console games tend to have about 65 FoV, while if you're playing on a 1080p monitor 90 FoV should be more natural. There is this calculator for calculating the correct FoV based on screen size, but FoV preferences are normally very personal.

Why is having the correct FoV so important?

Your eye sees you monitor as an extension of reality. Looking trough a monitor should feel like looking trough a window. If the view "trough the window" is warped some of us experience a feeling as if we were poisoned. It is very similar to motion sickness, however instead of our body being confused because our eyes are telling us that we are moving and our inner ear knowing that we're not, it's our eyes viewing something warped and our brain not understanding the image.

Why did I make this post?

Because too many developers these days think that if 60 FoV is alright for consoles, it's also alright with PCs, not thinking about how many people won't be able to buy and play their games because they feel sick from incorrect FoV. Also too many gamers that don't get health problems from low FoV don't know what it actually is. With this post I seek to educate people unaware about what FoV is and send a plea to the developers to include an FoV slider whenever they can.

These are such basic things that I can't believe that these mistakes are even getting made. I'm going to highlight a few of them in this blog. The ones that crossed my mind recently. I might make a part 2 and part 3 to this sometime later, because I'm absolutely sure that I'll forget to mention a bunch of mistakes today.

First levels are meant to interest and pull in your customer. Make them the best levels out of the whole game.

Recently Angry Joe did a first impressions video on Elder Scrolls online. His first impressions were not positive, so he started getting comments like these:

A game should not require to take time to get into. If I play for an hour and don't enjoy it, I consider putting the game down and not play it anymore. If I'm testing out a game in a beta, or playing a demo, I'm likely not to buy it. According to some people on the comment section the game gets good after level 10. It will require you 6 hours or more to get there. How many people will sit trough that many hours not enjoying themselves just to get to something good?

Let's compare it to Guild Wars 2. Let's say I created a new asura character. The first thing that I will have to fight before going out to the open world is going to be this:

A big portal monster that is flailing his arms all around.

The point of all of this? First impressions really do matter. Don't allow your customers to have a bad first impression, because they probably won't have the patience to get to the good bits.

Take feedback. Don't be precious. And don't try to censor the Internet

Recently a youtuber named TotalBiscuit has put out a review of an indie game called Guise of the Wolf. The review was negative. This article writes about the events that happened afterwards. The creators of the game are now threatening TotalBiscuit with legal action if he does not take his Twitter and his youtube channel down. Now if you search youtube for "Guise of the Wolf" in the first page there are already two videos discussing the situation instead of showcasing the game. Now if you google "Guise of the Wolf" this is the second link that comes up. It's right there on the first page of your google search.
Now what kind of reputation do you get for acting in such way? What will such acts do to your sales?

Develop for your customer. And don't cut corners.

A lot of gamers over the years had to put up with excuses for laziness. Percentage always translates to cash and how much cash you'll lose after those people won't buy your game.

For example GRID 2 released with no cockpit view because "only 5% of players use it and it eats up too much memory that we can instead use elsewhere." Well modders in a few days after release already had a working cockpit view prototype. So what was the point in alienating 5% of your player base and making sure that they won't buy your game?

These are just a few discussions that I have encountered today that made me think. I am sure that there are far more games out there with far more mistakes and I'll be sure to write about them when I'll run into them.

After playing different MMOs off and on for a while I decided to log back in on Guild Wars 2 today. What I found really surprised me. Instead of finding people in the open world I found them... Here.

On a beach. In an area with no useful non player controllable characters (NPCs), with no dungeons, with no enemies to kill. Just a beach. People were saying goodbye to this old beach, because this zone will be getting destroyed in a few days. It is so exciting and quite nostalgic to see old places go, therefore people decided to host a beach party. A beach party that already lasted for 5 hours when I discovered it.

That got me thinking. A lot of MMO developers forgot that the best way to keep the player coming back is not new tiers of gear, not putting a piece of loot behind a cruel time gate (time gate is when a developer forces the player to take a certain amount of time to get an item. For example there's a requirement to repeat a daily quest 20 times), but the community. People like to play with people. The log into massively multiplier games because they want to share their experience with hundreds of other people.

Making raid bosses that require a hundred people is the right approach then!

That's not entirely what I'm trying to say. Sure massive bosses in MMO can be fun. However bare in mind that the more people it will require, the less times it will be killed and the more people will be excluded.

For example this is a picture of my server being overly happy after beating a really hard world boss. We were ecstatic. It took us days and days of tries, but we finally did it!
However what happened after our server did it once? Nobody wanted to do it again. Too much effort, too much organization required. We left our mark, we did it once, why do it again?

Let's talk sandbox

There are two types of sandbox and both are equally good for an MMO:

Combat Based Sandbox

Leave your players a reason to fight each other. Either add a political system or some uncontrolled areas that players can take over. Add competition.

Look at EVE online for example. Recently the biggest battle in the game has happened. It lasted for over 3 days with players getting more ships and coming back. It must have been an unforgettable experience and a good memory for all those that participated. What did developers have to do for all of this? Nothing. All they needed to do was to set some empty space as something that can be controlled by a guild.

Role-playing based Sandbox

This type of sandbox requires offering the player a lot of different types of interactions that they could use. For example allowing players to play musical instruments, to have different dances, to allow them to hold their own property and similar elements to that.

By adding such elements you encourage creativity in your players, get free advertisement from them on video sites and you're allowed to take more time with making new content because the players are busy doing things like this remix:

What was the point of this article?

I just wanted to say that sandbox is good. I feel the need to say it, because developers seem to keep on forgetting that. Ever since the theme park (theme park means that all of the content is controlled by the developer. They add raids, attractions and players can do nothing else but only participate in this content. Players are not allowed to create) MMOs became unbelievably popular, the ability to add some sandbox elements seems to have been forgotten. So please, provide players with the ability to create their own memories, it will take some of the pressure to get content out as fast as possible from your developers shoulders and it will make your MMO much more lively.

I don't want to encourage piracy. I want to talk about games that never got sold and about games that are not getting sold anymore. I want to talk about all those versions and language translations that were only seen by the world due to piracy. And more importantly ask the question of why products get abandoned like that.

The curious case of Princess Maker 2

Princess Maker is a famous game from Japan in a Japanese "Raising-Up Games" genre. You probably never heard of it. And there's a reason for it. It never released in Europe or USA. It got translated to English fully, however due to the companies involved in the translation and selling the translated game going bankrupt the English version never got released. To quote Softegg: "Princess Maker 2 is not, nor has it ever been, freeware, abandonware, or shareware. The rights to the game still belong to NineLives, Gainax, and their licensees. SoftEgg is no longer in a position to grant publication rights to anyone, but still retains the rights to its English language translation (without the source code and art). So please stop pirating the game! Thank you.", however if it wasn't for the piracy I wouldn't know about this game even existing. Why? Because the English translation is out there, on piracy sites, however if you want to buy a real copy, you'll only find Japanese versions. Is it fair to the developer that their game is being pirated? No. Is it fair to the company hired to translate it that the game is getting pirated? No. But what is a consumer supposed to do when the only available English version is on a pirate site?
This raises me a question of "why?". Why not to bother to publish it, if you already have the English version on hands? I am sure that there probably were reasons, but as the situation is right now both the developer and the consumer lose out. The situation is rotten and it is really hard to see piracy as the bad guy here when it managed to preserve a translation of one game in a genre that is absent in Europe and USA.

Abandonia. Piracy that preserves games?

For the purpose of research I entered abandonia today to check how many games out of the site could I legally buy from the developers of said games. Pretty much none. Let's take an example - let's say that I wanted to actually buy Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet. no new copies to be found anywhere. It begs the question of why we allow these kind of products to perish? When emulators and online stores exist, why can't we sell something that is data indefinitely? Especially when there are stores that obviously specialize just in that and are profiting off it.

How do you beat piracy?

I'll quote Gabe Newell here "The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It’s by giving those people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates.". Before you ask your customers not to pirate make sure that they can buy your game at all. Then make sure that if you have a hand on a translation of the game, you actually release it. At worst release it as an official add on or a mod.

But what about traditional piracy?

According to studies done on musical records you will reduce the piracy by not including DRM. Sounds contradicting, right? But think from the user's point of view - for example the user does not have a constant Internet connection. He wants to buy your game, install it and play it. Nothing else. Imagine his surprise if for example you included DRM that asked him to stay online to play an offline game. Do you think that he'll buy from you again?
Provide your customer with at least some sort of a demo. While we don't have the numbers and a lot of companies don't believe that people pirate the games to try, if the game does not have a demo pirating is the only way to make sure that the game would even run on your computer.

I did all of that. My game is still being pirated!

Only now in my eyes do you have the right to wage war of piracy. Express your unhappiness, maybe send a few lawsuits. However the amount of piracy that you should get now should be far smaller than the piracy that you would get without completing this checklist.

Piracy is a dirty business. But there are reasons why it exists.
